Santa Visits Scoil Mhuire.

December has been an exciting month at Scoil Mhuire. Santa Claus made his annual visit to the younger children. He visited the classes, spoke to the children and treated them to a marvellous and magical story from his own story book. All are aiming for best behaviour in anticipation of the big visit on December 24th. The children impressed Santa with their singing and poetry.

Christmas Concerts.

Children and staff have been very busy preparing for our Christmas Concerts.  These were held over two entertaining nights.  Pupils in Scoil Mhuire were treated to VIP matinee tickets to the dress rehearsal. Tuesday’s Line up featured carol singing from the Senior Infants, Singing and Recitation from Ms. Weldon’s Class,  Drama of A Christmas Carol from Mrs Barry’s Fifth Class, Pitched Bell Playing and Singing from Ms Fennell’s Class. The evening concluded with a beautiful “Rock around the Flock!” Nativity by Ms. Power’s 3rd Class.

Wednesday night had another fabulous line up. The show opened with the ever entertaining Junior Infants who treated everyone to their sweet carol singing. This was followed by Ms. Lake’s first class singing and poetry recitation.  Ms O’ Doherty dazzled us all with their slick acting and snazzy costumes giving us “Alas in Blunderland!”.  Ms. Sheil’s class performed their Christmas carols by playing pitched bells. This has become a signature performance of our fourth class. Ms Sheils class also sang “Winter Song” and “Somewhere only We know.” The evening came  to a close with a musical nativity, “Rock around the Flock” presented by Ms Flahavan’s 3rd Class. We would like to commend our pupils for their great performances and we would like to thank the parents who practised lines and provided  great costumes. There will be no shortage of party pieces over Christmas.

Interview with Fr. Hassett.

Fifth Class decided it would be nice to interview Fr. Hassett about his thoughts on Christmas.

1.What is your favourite Christmas tradition?

I love the Christmas Masses. I say 3 masses but I go to them all to meet the people. I ask the children if Santa came and what he brought. I bless the toys. Then I go to my sister’s house and watch my nephews and niece enjoy Christmas and see what Santa brought?

2.Where exactly was Jesus born in Bethlehem?

I visited the Holy Land in 1999. There was a church called The Church of the Nativity. If you go downstairs there is a lower level which has a star on the ground. People of Bethlehem believe it was here that the birth of Jesus took place. As it was over 2000 year ago it is difficult to be really certain.

3.What is your favourite thing to do at Christmas?

Apart from the masses I just love Christmas Crackers. It is lovely to read the joke and have some fun.

4.What is your favourite Christmas food?

5.Everything, the soup, vol au vents, turkey and ham, brussel sprouts, everything. I prefer to eat enough but not be over full. That’s hard to do on Christmas day as the food is so good.

6.Do you like to drink hot chocolate on Christmas Eve?

No actually, I don’t like hot drinks at all. Just cold milk or water.

7.As a child what did you want to be when you grew up?

A farmer like my father, I wanted to work hard on the farm with the cows and drive tractors and cut silage and do anything farming related.

8.What is the one message you have for us over Christmas?

Be kind to people and think of others.

Sixth Class Charity Collection for Mental Health Ireland.

Well done to our 6th Class who made a collection for Mental Health Ireland. This Charity was nominated by the 6th class pupils themselves. This raised the impressive sum of €1050.

The cheque was presented to Mr De Paor on behalf of the 6th class for this very worthy cause.

Second Class Christmas Hat Show.

Second Class were very busy getting creative with their hat making skills. Each child created something unique featuring great Christmas Style. The hats were modelled with pride for all to admire.

Christmas Quizzes.

Children were treated to some great Christmas Quizzes at Scoil Mhuire. There was great excitement as teams were announced and classes assembled in the hall. General knowledge and novelty topical questions made this an enjoyable and educational event. Well done to all participants.

Carol Singing.

As usual  the sweet voices of the children in Scoil Mhuire practised their Carol Singing during December. 4th, 5th and 6th Class performed some of our favourites at the Blessing of Abbeyside Crib on Friday December 13th. One of our Christmas highlight is the whole school assembly where everybody joins in our christmas carols. Each year the standard improves further and we hope that by 6th class all pupils will have a very rich repertoire of all the classic Christmas hymns and carols. Many thanks to Mr. De Paor and Ms. McCloskey for keyboard accompaniment and vocals.

Merry Christmas to All.

Everyone in Scoil Mhuire would like to wish you all a safe and Happy Christmas. We will see you when school re opens on Monday January 6th. Nollaig Shona Daoibh go léir.
