Your child is learning about time (the clock in one hour intervals ) .Your child needs to know the language of time – hands , clock, face, long/short hand ,o’clock and the numbers 1-12.
Make a clock with your child using cardboard and stick the hands to the face using a brass fastner clip or even better if you have a clock to hand that the child can manipulate – show your child a time eg 7 o’clock and ask:
1. What time is it now ?
2. How do know it’s 7 o’clock?
Do the same with a number of other times (make sure they are on the hour ).

Topic -Data

Data can be organised in many ways in everyday life from pictograms to bar charts to bar graphs etc. In Senior Infants , your child is expected to represent and interpret data in two rows or columns. It is best to introduce your child to data by using a range of objects familiar to your child .

 

Making rows

Give your child some counters , buttons , lego or 1p coins etc Ask him/her to make a row of five coins. Then ask him/her to place a row of four coins directly underneath.

These rows should be in one to one correspondence i.e your child should be able to see the coins in the bottom row that correspond to the ones in the top row. S/he should also be able to see that there is an extra coin in the top row.   Ask questions ,such as:

  1. How many coins are in the top row now?
  2. How many coins are in the bottom row now?
  3. How many more coins are there in the top row now than in the bottom row?
  4. How many fewer coins are there in the bottom row than in the top row ?
  5. What could we do to make the two rows have the same amount?(add one more to the bottom or take one from the top .

This work is a continuation of the work done on representing and interpreting data. Your child will now be asked to observe/count which set has more than or less than another set . They are simply asked to observe and solve the problem using different strategies, eg. counting on, comparing by one-to- one correspondence, etc

Using items from home eg. buttons , lego blocks ,spoons , pasta shapes etc get your child to put nine items in the top row and eight items in the bottom row. Ask your child the following questions :
How many items are in the top row ?
How many items are in the bottom row?
How many more items are in the top row?
How many fewer items are in the bottom row?

Repeat this process using different quantities and arranging the items vertically instead of horizontally .

So 6 is less than 7 by 1.

Hope all is well. We are back to a full week of work. At this stage of the year we would usually start revision in some subject areas . Here is a daily plan of work for the upcoming week . We hope it acts as a guidance to you .

2. Why do you think Burger is lurking behind the fridge ?
3. Do you think the fridge is stocked with healthy food ?
4. Look at the expression on Feena’s face on pg 17 . How do you think she feels ?
5. Would you think GG had been playing football with Globby and Denzel? Why?
6. What do you think will happen next ?
7. Do you think somebody should have given Burger some food? Why ?

Topic -Money

Your child will be learning about 1, 2, 5, 10 and 20 cent coins. This is done by doing activities using concrete materials. Your child needs to know the mathematical language associated with money – dear, expensive, cheap, cheaper,, Which is cheaper ?, How many?, count, money , brown ,copper, What colour is a ……. coin?
Exposing your child to real coins is the best way to teach him/her. There is nothing better than hands -on experience .

· Game : Matching coins.
Collect as many 1, 2 5 10 and 20 cent coins. Place them in a pile in the centre of the table. Give your child 5 bags / cups / boxes etc . Write the amounts 1c, 2c, 5c, 10c and 20c on post- it notes and place each post -it note on one of the boxes. Ask your child to sort the coins into the correct boxes.

· Hold up a coin and ask :
1. What coin have I in my hand ?
2. What colour is it ?
3. Ask your child to hold up a match to your coin and to tell you what numeral is on the coin .
Do the same for all the other coins up to and including the 20c coin .

Game : Shop
Ask your child to help you make a play shop in a section of a room in the house .Collect a number of easily sourced items – they can be items that you have bought in the shop. Use post -it notes or pieces of paper as price tags. No item should cost more than 10c.
Make up some questions about the items or get your child to make up some questions, for example :
1. How much does the packet of cereal cost?
2. Which is dearer/ more expensive : the apple or the orange?
3. I have 6c. Have I enough money to buy the carrot?
4. Which item is the dearest/ most expensive/ cheapest/ least expensive ?
