World Book Day.
The first Thursday in March is World Book Day. A day when everyone has an opportunity to celebrate the joy of reading. True to our form, the children in Scoil Mhuire generate an atmosphere of immense excitement with a variety of entertaining book related events. Junior Infants enjoyed a Julia Donaldson scavenger hunt. Of course the highlight of the day is our display of Character dress up costumes. As usual there was an abundance of creativity for everyone to marvel at. The children (and their parents) are to be commended for the energy and goodwill that they brought to this event. Enjoy the photos!
Seachtain na Gaeilge.
Bhí seachtain álainn againn le haghaidh Seachtain na Gaeilge . Bhí ceolchoirm, céilí, amhránaíocht, ceol trad agus tráth na gceist againn. Bhí cluichí éagsúla á imirt sna ranganna. An-craic ar fad!
Quizzes.
There’s been quizzes galore this term and plenty of events for children to enjoy. Our parents association held a great table quiz in the school with great prizes for the top teams. Our annual Mary Walsh quiz took place on March 26th. This event is held in memory of our dear former colleague Mrs. Mary Walsh, RIP. Mary was an exemplary teacher who inspired all who knew her. She was a wonderful promotor of quizzes in our school.
This Easter quiz is a wonderful event held in her memory.
Members of 5th class attended a table quiz hosted by Scoil Gharabháin and 2 of our fifth class teams were placed in 1st and 3rd place.
Our proudest quiz achievement so far this year is from our u11 and u13 Credit Union quiz teams. They represented our school and Cairde Credit Union in the chapter level of the CU quiz. To our joy our u11 team were victorious and will now progress to the National final in Croke Park on April 20th. Well done to both teams and Ms. Walsh for this marvellous achievement.
Camogie and Girls' Football.
Camogie And Football.
Pictured is the Abbeyside Girls Mini 7s team who took part in a blitz in Dungarvan GAA pitch on the 10th of March. The girls played three very strong teams and came out victorious in all of their games. They showed great skill, determination and teamwork throughout! Their efforts now take them into the next stages of the competition which will take place after the Easter holidays. We also will look forward to the 15-aside competition which will follow. Great excitement amongst the group! Huge well done to the girls!
We also would like to extend a huge congratulations to our very own Izzy Daly (camogie) and Rojin Cambeg (football) who were both selected to play on the Waterford Primary Game teams. Rojin will line out the day the Waterford footballers take on Tipperary in Fraher Field and Izzy will travel to Cusack Park in Ennis to play when the Waterford hurlers face Clare. A very proud day having both our Scoil Mhuire Abbeyside cailíní selected!
School Gardening.
It’s that time of year again! 3rd class have been busy over the past few weeks, keeping a close eye on their sprouting seed potatoes and this month we planted them into our school garden. Here’s hoping we’ll have a delicious crop of potatoes by the end of June. Mrs Looby and Mrs Walsh’s 2nd class planted carrots and Mr O’ Dea’s 6th class planted scallions and lettuce also. We’re looking forward to trying a few other vegetables and wildflowers over the coming warmer Summer months in Term 3.
Parents' Association Raffle.
We have a very hard working Parents’ Association who are very dedicated to enhancing the pupils’ experiences at school. Their latest project has been a bumper Easter Raffle. Families have generously contributed to this by buying and selling tickets. Very generous local businesses have provided very popular prizes. There was great excitement everywhere on the morning of March 27th. Nominated children from each class attended the exciting event. Congratulations to the lucky winners and enjoy your great prizes!
Mini 7s Hurling.
.
Pictured are our Mini 7s buachaillí who competed recently in Dungarvan GAA Club. The boys played very well, in tough conditions and showed great heart & determination. After playing Scoil Garbhán & Whitechurch they got to the final where we lost out to Scoil Garbhán in a tight match. Maith sibh lads!
Rugby.
A big thank you to Dungarvan Rugby Club who provided coaching for the very lucky boys and girls in First Class over the past five weeks. Their new skills were then applied in a blitz which took place at Dungarvan Rugby Club with a number of neighbouring schools. A great day of sport and fun for all.
