Scoil Mhuire hosts Féile Fichelle Tournament.

February 1st was a busy day at Scoil Mhuire. It was the day we welcomed children and staff from 5 other schools as we hosted the Féile Fichelle Tournament. Tony, Mr O’ Dea and the 6th class were very busy preparing our school hall for the visitors. Tables and chairs to accommodate 160 chess players were required. Scoil Mhuire entered 4 teams of 8 in the tournament.  It was a pleasure to have St. James’ NS. Stradbally, Kinsalebeg NS, Scoil Náisiúnta na Rinne, Scoil Baile Mhic Airt and Bunscoil Bhothar na Naomh, Lismore. Each school proudly wore their school jerseys. All participants assisted the chess arbiter Lukasz by setting out the numbers, boards and pieces. There was great excitement when the first game began. It was very enjoyable to play chess with new opponents. After each game the scores were recorded and soon the next round of fixtures was available. Throughout the day each participant played 6 chess games. Everybody involved enjoyed the day thoroughly and  gained great experience from playing against other teams.

St. Brigid.

It wouldn’t be February without lessons on the story of St Brigid. While older children created the traditional St. Brigid’s Crosses using rushes last month the infants explored the crosses using construction toys in their classroom.

Fourth Class News.

Fourth class have been covering Education in Abbeyside in past times during their history lessons. They’ve been learning about schooldays in the Old School at The Pond.  Ms Sheil and Ms Fennell had  sourced some very interesting resources and produced a recreation of a classroom similar to those that would have been seen in the late 19th and early 20th century.

Chess club for fourth class started this month.  The children are learning and improving the game in the hope that they too may participate in a chess tournament next year.

The pupils of fourth class have been attending swimming lessons in Clonea Sports and Leisure Centre. The Aquatics Strand of PE is always very popular with children who feel fully energised and refreshed when they get back to class.

Spar Primary Fives.

Our boys and girls soccer teams have been training hard at lunchtime since January. On Friday the 23rd of February,  they travelled to the SETU arena for the Spar Primary Fives 5-a-aside competition.

All three girls teams battled hard against stiff competition on the day but unfortunately did not progress to the next stage of the competition.

Congratulations to the three boys teams who have qualified for the county finals which will take place in April back in the SETU arena.

Pancakes!

As Scoil Mhuire prepared for mid term there were lots of sweet treats to be sampled. Some lucky children had pancake stories and even real freshly made pancakes to eat, yum!

Leap Day Birthday.

All at Scoil Mhuire would like to wish a very happy birthday to our only leap day birthday girl Saoirse Waters.

Saoirse is in Ms Weldon’s First class so even though she is eight years old she is celebrating her second bithday on February 29th!
